City of Santa Maria

Tell us what you did during Active Aging Week to redefine the term "Active."

The City of Santa Maria Active Aging Committee sponsored Active Aging Week September 28-October 5, 2019. With leadership by City staff, the committee includes representatives from the local senior citizens club, assisted living communities, the regional medical center and a neighboring senior center run by a local community based organization. The week included a variety of twenty-seven events and programs to celebrate the aging process and to highlight ways to stay healthy at any age. The Active Aging Dance featured the Riptide Big Band with a Movin’ and Groovin’ theme. Free exercise classes were offered several times during the week and a 50+ Pickleball Tournament included nearly 60 teams! The finale was a Volksmarch (Intergenerational Community Walk) with a 2.5K, 5K, and 10K option. The four walkers in the middle drove 6 hours to spend the weekend in Santa Maria to participate and explained they each walk an average of 50 miles per week. The City of Santa Maria also hosted Active Aging Week health seminars, emergency preparedness training, Arts and Craft Pop Up Shop, geocaching lesson and hike in rustic Los Flores Ranch Park, and a Mobile Pet Clinic. That’s how we “Redefine Active” in Santa Maria, California!
