White Oaks Estate: At White Oak Estates in Spartanburg, S.C. this was our 10th year of hosting Active Aging Week, and we certainly celebrated BIG! On Monday we began the week with Wine tasting at Point Lookout Vineyard in Hendersonville, N.C., Balance Screenings with the Wellness and Therapy departments, and a Presentation on Aging in Place. On Tuesday our Department Managers hosted a Panel Discussion forum to answer resident/community member questions on campus life and level of care transitions. That evening we enjoyed Oktoberfest with Foothills Ooompah Band, German food, Bier Stein relay race games, a Bier garden, and local health care exhibitors. Wednesday started with a lovely Morning Prayer and Reflection time led by several of our residents who are pastors, then we held a Smart Device Learning Forum. We ended the day with an off campus walk at Cowpens National Battlefield. Thursday we took an adventurous group Hang Gliding in Thermal Valley, N.C. while others enjoyed a Morning Guided Meditation, followed by Wii Games and a new Cardiopalooza Exercise Class. We finished the week on Friday with an educational presentation on Living a Healthy Lifestyle with Diabetes. The most meaningful part of the week for me as a staff member, was a comment made by a resident who had just finished her hang gliding flight with tears of joy in her eyes. She said "I never thought I would be able to do something like this. I'm so happy right now!" After being involved with this campaign for many years, I can tell you that we are changing lives and marking items off bucket lists here at our community! It's truly incredible to be part of this every year!
